. this is from "the new york times" editorial. and john, independent from texas. caller: i have been unemployed for about eight and a half months, and this situation is just ridiculous. they claim the economy is better here in texas, it is a bold face life. the few jobs that are available are part time walmart-type jobs. i've got a college degree. i graduated from college 16 years ago. i am getting $828 a month in unemployment. and these republicans want you to think people are sponging? try sponging off of 829 -- $820 a month in a high-cost area. the local chamber of commerce brag about how great it is to live here in the valley. if you are making $80,000, it is reasonable cost of living. but if you are barely scraping by at 20,000, it is barely. and perry greeting somebody jobs, that is upsurged. the jobs are just not here. let me tell you this, my last job was working at the local work force office. we are the ones who are supposed to help people find jobs. i can tell you the real honest unemployment rate is much higher than what they are reporting and has been for years. it has not been --

that will be moving into texas, but most of the country is in good shape, a far cry from yesterday when there was so much rain and severe weather through georgia late yesterday towards the rush hour. there were not a lot of people on the roads. serious problems. there is a look at what's going on right now. the storm has moved out to the north and the east. here's a look back at the damage in georgia. we had 50 trees knocked down and 17 power poles. thousands of people without power. tens of thousands without power. there was structural damage as well. this was probably straight line wind damage and not a tornado, but a scary night and again that storm is zipped out to the north and the east. the only thing we are watching is lingering snow in new mexico. we heard about a closure along the texas-new mexico state line along i-40. light snow continues and we will see a few inches about three to five in roswell and two to four in midland. that storm that moves out tomorrow, there will be issues on the roads in texas. we are talking about 45 and 35. i-20 and i-tennesseeing light rain and lingering snow.

the ogalala aquifer with many states. they have an irresponsibility set of water laws in texas, which basically allows you to pump and use as much water as you've got equipment for. whereas in our state, we have tried to limit water use and make it much more orderly. but the frustration on our side is that the water level in the aquifer continues to drop because of the excessive water use on the texas side of the border. we have two straws in one aquifer that's straddling the state line. is there a way the government can play a more constructive role in this? there's no incentive on the part of texas to do anything other than what they are doing, until they run out of water. but ms. castle, maybe you have thoughts on how to solve this problem. >> that's a tough problem, senator bingaman. i would first say that one of the best weapons in any sort of ground water dispute is good information. and that's sometimes lacking in ground water particularly. so i know that usgs has been doing some work to characterize that aquifer and to look at rates of depletion and the stresses on the aquifer

carolina, tennessee, texas, wisconsin. all five states all controlled by republican legislatures have made it harder for citizens to vote. in south carolina's case, the justice department's actually stepped in to block the new voter i.d. law. they say it will suppress voter turnout among minorities. according to the doj, 82,000 minority citizens in south carolina are registered to vote but lack the kind of identification the new law requires. these voters are nearly 20% more likely to be disenfranchised by this change than are white voters. now, the department of justice can do this. it can step in in south carolina's new law because of the voting rights act of 1965. under section 5 of the voting rights act, certain states, states with an egregious history of legalized racial discrimination and suppressing the my tinority vote, those sta must get something called preclearance. they're going to significantly alter their election laws. the department of justice has to sign off on it. south carolina is one of those states. kansas isn't. south carolina's republican governor, nickki haley, vowe
